Metal vs. Plastic

What does it really mean when your Optician says metal or plastic? Do you know what your eyeglass frames are made of?

Most “metal” frames are made of a combination of metals, including nickel, monel, cobalt, and beryllium. Most “plastic” frames are actually made of cellulose acetate, which is a combination of cotton and/or wood fibers.

Which material is best for you?

That depends on a few conditions, the first being allergies. If you have sensitive skin, you would most likely be best fit with a metal frame made of stainless steel or titanium. Most of the time, titanium frames are combined with other metals to give them flexibility. Most stainless steel frames are not flexible, however they are very corrosive resistant. Nickel seems to be the metal most likely to cause an allergic reaction with those that have sensitive skin.

Another choice for those with sensitive skin may be cellulose acetate, or propionate. These materials do not contain any exposed metal to touch the skin.

If allergies aren’t a concern, consider when and where you will wear the glasses most. Fit is also an important factor in choosing a frame. Most metal frames come with adjustable nose pads, where the plastic frames have a nonadjustable bridge.

Choosing the proper frame and lenses to fit your lifestyle can seem overwhelming. Feel free to stop by and I will be more than happy to evaluate your needs and spend one-on-one time with you to pick the perfect pair of glasses for you.
