Eye Makeup Safety

As women, we like to look good, but need to keep our eye health a priority when applying makeup. Here are a few tips to ensure eye makeup safety when applying makeup at home or at the cosmetic counter:

1. Eye cosmetics can harbor bacteria and should be thrown away after 3 months.

2. When using makeup testers in stores, always make sure product samples haven’t been touched by another person. Also make sure you or the person applying your makeup is using a fresh applicator.

3. Never share eye cosmetics with others.

4. After an eye infection such as pink eye, buy fresh cosmetics and applicators to avoid recontamination.

5. Avoid glittery eye makeup, especially when wearing contacts. If particles get trapped between the contact and corneal surface, they can scratch the cornea and may lead to infection.

6. Remove all eye makeup, especially mascara, at night.
