Scleral Contact Lenses

“Without hesitation, I can say my scleral lenses have truly exceeded my expectations. My vision in these lenses is very good and they are by far the most comfortable I have ever had. (Keep in mind I have been wearing contacts for more than 30 years.) For the great fit, I credit the doctors and team at Crozet Eye Care. The right fit isn’t always easy to achieve but they made it happen for me, and I am grateful.”

Earlier this year when I joined Crozet Eye Care, I was so excited to hear that we offer scleral contact lenses. Although not the most simple lenses to fit, they are arguably the most life-changing contact lenses with regards to vision and comfort. Individuals who have been less than satisfied with their previous contact lens experience will often benefit most from these extraordinary lenses.

Typically we fit these specialty lenses on individuals with: 1) a medical condition such as keratoconus or dry eye, 2) corneas that are irregular due to having LASIK or PRK, or 3) a high near-sighted, far-sighted, or astigmatism prescription.

Scleral lenses are large diameter gas permeable lenses that rest on the white part (sclera) of your eye. This unique design minimizes the effects of irregularities on the front surface of your eye. For this reason, individuals with keratoconus or post-LASIK/PRK may achieve better vision with scleral lenses than with glasses.  The lenses are made of materials that let oxygen easily pass through the lens. Due to the way they fit the eye, there is a thin cushion of fluid between the lens and your eye at all times. This is why patients with dry eye like them. Each scleral lens is custom designed based on the wearer’s needs.

Whether you have dry eyes after hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains or have had previous eye irregularities or surgeries, scleral lenses could be the solution that allows you to see your best! If you would like to hear more about scleral lenses, contact me, Dr. Katsev, for a consultation.
